When planning to refit a truck-mounted crane or carry out replacement of a service-worn crane boom, proper selection of the boom assembly stands as a critical factor governing lifting operational safety and overall job-site productivity. A large number of procurement personnel tend to fix their attention merely on the rated lifting tonnage, yet overlook core considerations including base material properties, structural design features and the actual site operating conditions the equipment will face.

The first step of selection lies in clarifying the type of boom, namely telescopic boom or knuckle boom. Telescopic boom sections extend along a linear path, delivering a comparatively large working outreach. This configuration is widely adopted for lifting operations on open ground, such as log loading and scrap material handling. In contrast, the knuckle boom features a folded structure that occupies minimal space when stowed, making it well suited for operations within confined roadways, enclosed yards and container handling tasks indoors.

The second key consideration is the grade of structural steel adopted for fabrication. Q690 and Q960 high-strength low-alloy steel have become standard materials for contemporary crane boom manufacturing. Steel with higher tensile strength can cut down the dead weight of the boom structure without compromising its rated lifting capacity, which in turn alleviates the load burden imposed on the truck chassis. For heavy-cycle, continuous lifting duties, general low-strength carbon steel is not recommended, as it cannot sustain long-duration heavy loads reliably.

Thirdly, full verification of mating dimensions is indispensable, especially for replacement boom assemblies. The diameter of pin holes, layout of connection lugs and mounting positions for hydraulic circuits must align precisely with the original crane host structure. In cases where standard stock booms fail to satisfy the matching requirements, OEM custom fabrication based on certified engineering drawings offers a viable and dependable alternative.

Finally, factory quality verification procedures must be confirmed. Eligible crane boom products are required to undergo non-destructive crack testing and static load proof testing prior to delivery. Boom assemblies without complete inspection records carry substantial risk: hidden defects in weld seams may propagate after a short service period, creating severe safety risks for lifting crews and property on site.

Should you require custom-fabricated telescopic booms or knuckle booms for your truck-mounted crane fleet, you may submit your complete engineering drawings and technical specifications to us for a formal, tailored quotation supported by professional engineering review.
